Accessibility
This site should be usable with a keyboard, with a screen reader, at a large text size, and without animation. Where it is not, we would like to know.
What we aim at
WCAG 2.2 Level AA. The site was last reviewed against it on 17 August 2026, by automated measurement of every page together with manual keyboard testing.
What conforms
- Every page has one main heading and one main landmark, so a screen reader can jump straight to the content.
- A “skip to content” link is the first thing the keyboard reaches, on every page.
- Every photograph carries alternative text, or is marked decorative.
- Every form field has a label a screen reader announces, and can be autofilled.
- Controls are at least 24 pixels tall, and the navigation button at least 44.
- The archive carousel takes the arrow keys, and slides scrolled out of view are removed from the tab order rather than left as invisible targets.
- Animation is suppressed for anyone whose system asks for reduced motion, and no video plays with sound on its own.
- Nothing on the site conveys meaning by colour alone.
What does not yet
Being specific here is the point. These are known and are being worked on:
- A small amount of secondary text — the footer credit, the language switch, some labels set in the smallest size — sits slightly below the required contrast against its background.
- The site has been tested with a keyboard and with automated tools, but not yet in a full session with a screen-reader user. Automated testing catches roughly half of what matters.
- Photographs in the press archive are marked decorative rather than individually described, because the surrounding article text carries their meaning. Per-image descriptions would be better.
